From department store to department store
Built in the 14th century as a department store became later the heart of the Basel Post Company. The distinctive listed building on Freie Strasse in Basel could tell many stories - and will shine in new splendour from around mid-2025.
Herzog & de Meuron combine history with modernity
The Basel-based architecture firm is guiding the historic building through its transformation.
Herzog & de Meuron are planning an open and inviting design for the entire first floor. The technical floors on the first and second floors in the inner courtyard area will be removed. In the style of the former atrium, a roofed patio will be created that will bring daylight down to the first floor and act as a link between the passage and the counter hall.
In the former counter hall on the ground floor as well as on the mezzanine floor, around 1,500 m² of retail space is being created for uses such as boutiques, service businesses and gastronomy. The upper floors are reserved for 5,000 m² of prestigious office space.
In addition, an attic floor is being built with a terrace and surrounding glazing, which offers a 360-degree view of Basel's old town.
The changing face of Freie Strasse
Currently, Freie Strasse and the surrounding alleys are undergoing extensive renovation. The city of Basel is taking the opportunity for an attractive redesign. By 2023, an inviting pedestrian zone for strolling, experiencing, enjoying, living and working will be created - and «Hauptpost Basel» will be right at its centre.
THE HEART OF BASEL FROM APPROX. SUMMER 2025
Prestigious office space on floors 1 to 5
A new light-flooded inner courtyard surrounds the office spaces, which extend from the 1st to 5th floor. A total of 5,000 m2 of well-designed flexible city office space is available. The top two floors also offers special areas with outdoor access and a stunning view, which can be used individually.
Retail and gastronomy space on new promenade in Basel
Following the redevelopment of Freie Strasse, «Hauptpost Basel» can now also score with over 1,500 m² of retail space on the ground floor.
The careful refurbishment of the main post office space has opened up new insights for the public into the unique rooms, some of which are more than nine meters high and protected as historic monuments.
Partial areas of 250 m² and more are possible in the modern designed sales areas. Gastronomy use is also conceivable. On a mezzanine floor, expansion possibilities show the flexibility of the spaces. Storage areas and toilet facilities with break rooms can be organized in the basement.
